Leone Clerici, an esteemed Roman sculptor active in the second half of the 19th century, specialized in accurate reproductions of famous ancient sculptures, copies of which were in great demand long after the end of the Grand Tour era. From his Roman studio, among his Signed works that have appeared on the market include the busts of Alexander the Great (1875), Caesar Augustus (1876) and Marcus Aurelius (1887) and the figures of Psyche (1886), the Capitoline Venus (1886) and the Italic Venus by Canova (1870) . Clerici was a refined sculptor, the excellent quality of his works is undeniable. His clientele included big names, both Italian and foreign.

Demosthenes was an Athenian politician and orator and one of the ten great Attic orators. Remarkable is the importance that in the Athenian political and cultural life of the 4th century BC. had the figure of Demosthenes, who a centuries-old tradition judged to be the greatest Greek orator and one of the greatest of all time.

The bust of Clerici takes inspiration from the bust of Demosthenes preserved in the Louvre, a Roman work inspired by a bronze statue of Polyeuctos (v. 280 av. J.-C.). Discovered in Italy.
