Albert Bertalan (Jászberény-Hungary, September 21, 1899; Paris, December 28, 1957) was a Franco-Hungarian painter of the Paris School.
“Naked woman at the toilet”, large oil on canvas signed.
From the late 19th century to World War II, Paris was the center of the art world. Artists and intellectuals from around the world came to Paris, attracted by the atmosphere of creative freedom established by the French Impressionists. Thanks to the innovations of the impressionists, the direction of art changed forever, the times were ripe for a new Renaissance. The School of Paris, as this vast group of artists is called, embodies the spirit of modernism. Albert Bertalan was born on September 21, 1899 in Jaszbereny, Hungary. He is known for painting compositions of figures in unique environments, including women by the sea, among other similar subjects. He studied at the Nagybanyai Art School under some of Hungary’s most important artists, including Ivànyi Grünwald, Adolf Fényes and Istàn Réti. He received an individual exhibition in Nuremberg and exhibited regularly at the Pal Lazlo gallery in Budapest. In 1924, he moved to Paris where he had his first exhibition in 1925. His exhibitions at the Paris Salon included portraits at the Salon des Indépendants in 1926 and 1930, the Salon d’Automne in 1926 and the Salon des Tuileries in 1930. In 1928 he won the Szinyei Prize. During his time in Paris, his paintings were very expressionistic, incorporating composition, brush technique and a unique vision, which today make his work very identifiable. His work develops through many distinct phases: Impressionist, Cézanne, Matissian, Cubist and Modernist.
Our painting features a dense mix of bright colors and sharp outlines, typical of the Parisian period: a naked young woman sits on the toilet while a Creole servant brushes her hair, against a backdrop of bright red floral curtains. The large dimensions, the beautiful colors and the particularity of the scene make it a unique painting.
