Roma 17th Century Carved and Gilded Maratta Frame

Sculptured and carved wooden frame, Rome, 17th century. Gilding with pure gold leaf with orange bolus preparation.

The frame, belonging to the Roman lexicon and known under the name “maratta”, focuses exclusively on the powerful mixtiligne form. The vigorous cutting of the leaves and sub leaves of the internal and external profiles leads to an important commission.
This type of frame, as well as the model called “Salvator Rosa”, will be considered fundamental throughout Central Italy from the 17th century until the middle of the following century. The Roman production is distinguished by elegant sculptures and defined with very bright gilding.
