Imposing Eglomise Glass Marquetry Cabinet Hard Stone Naples 18th

Imposing Neapolitan cabinet in ebony, blackened wood and églomisé glass imitating hard stone, mid-18th century.

This box-shaped cabinet opens with six drawers adorned with medallions imitating hard stone made using the eglomised glass technique. The process used, known since Antiquity, consists of sticking a thin sheet of gold or silver under the glass and making a drawing using a drypoint. A second layer of glass is affixed to secure the design. Since the Renaissance, many cabinets have been decorated using this technique. In Naples, in the second quarter of the 17th century, this production developed thanks to an artist named Vittorio Billa, signing “VBL”, who made it a specialty.
Very good state of conservation. Interior of the original drawers painted yellow. Small signs of the times.
