Entourage Of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636 – 1699) Still Life Basket Of Flowers

Circle of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (Lille 1636 – London 1699). Basket of flowers on stone slab. Oil on canvas, late 17th century.

The dark background and bare table highlight the explosion of color in this basket filled with flowers, including speckled tulips, peonies and carnations. This painting features a format often used by the artist, a horizontal representation of a bouquet of flowers in a basket or vase placed on a sober stone slab. This sobriety of the table top accentuates, by contrast, the richness of the bouquet with its changing colours.

The painting is on a second canvas with the frame replaced and, according to what was reported by the previous owners, it underwent a conservative restoration with cleaning and final varnishing about ten years ago. It features a beautiful 18th century Italian frame in black and gilt lacquered wood.
