Early 18th Century, Italian School Pandolfo Reschi Battle Scene Oil Painting

Pandolfo Reschi (born Pandolf Resch, born in Danzica in 1643, died in Florence in 1699) is an Italian painter active in Italy. He went to Rome when he was young and became one of Giacomo Borgognone’s most capable pupils. He painted battles and imitated the landscapes of Salvator Rosa. He also excelled in perspective and architectural views. Arrived in Florence in the middle of 1660, he continued his studies with Livio Mehus, Antonio Giusti and Pier Dandini. In 1670 he was hired by the Medici court and became a protege of Cardinal Francesco Maria de Medici, with whom he lived from 1680 until the end of his days.
His paintings were much appreciated by the great families of the Tuscan nobility, in particular the Gerinis. He worked for the Uffizi Gallery under the direction of the Florentine scholar and architect Giacinto Marmi.

Our painting comes by inheritance from an important Florentine collection; the family, belonging to the nobility, had had contact with Reschi during his stay in Florence and in fact the pictorial quality is very close to that of the master. It is therefore necessary to consider that there is no news about the existence of Reschi’s disciples or followers and that our painting takes up the imposing original preserved in the Gallery of Palazzo Gerini, which suggests a preparatory version. One cannot help but notice the liveliness with which the scene was painted, as Baldinucci said about Pandoflo Reschi’s figurines:

“it is easy to distinguish each of their operations”; and this through the thick smoke of battle.

The painting is in excellent condition and it’s presented in its original frame in gilded wood.

The painting is accompanied by the monographic book “Pandolfo Reschi” by Novella Barbolani di Montauto.
