17th Italian Baroque Master’s Throne

Rare model of an Italian Baroque throne in papier-mâché and gilded wood, 17th century.

Since the Middle Ages it was common to have carpentry models made by qualified cabinetmakers to show them to the royal client: these models often represent true masterpieces of an art of furniture which lacks nothing of what makes the value of their major references: marquetry, tapestry, materials, finishing details; just like in reality, but smaller.

The magnificence of this model is impressive: the throne is richly decorated with caryatids, festoons on all sides and a crown on top, Mecca gilt and lacquer.

The rarity of the model makes it practically a unique piece, both for the type of furniture and for the period, the 17th century, of which very few examples of its kind remain.
