Rare pair of marble guardian lions, 16th century Venetian sculpture.

The lion is the zoomorphic image par excellence, repository of a complex set of multiple meanings.
Symbol of the Evangelist Mark, the lion was placed as a pillar at the entrances of early Christian and Romanesque churches, a benevolent sculptural guardian for the faithful, co-animating the double meaning of silent judge and personification of Christ, which already the liturgical topography that he had recognized as a living Door.
From the Renaissance, appear on the railings of private houses as a warning. In Venice, palaces often had no front door, so Venetians decided to make miniature lions to place on window sills. this custom became very widespread, so much so that the lion cubs were produced in the most disparate materials according to the social position of the owner of the house. Most of these lions were lost, often falling from window sills or stolen from windows left open. Their production was limited to the 16th and 17th centuries and those in marble are, of course, the luxury models belonging to noble palaces.
