16th Century Italian Siena Blackened And Gilded Wood Cassetta Frame


Rare frame known as Cassetta in blackened and gilded molded wood, with an inverted profile.
Finely decorated in gold with a plant motif commonly called “parsley” in technical jargon.
This model of setting, typically Tuscany, is limited to the area of Siena. 16th century period.

Tuscany is known in the history of art as the cradle of the most beautiful frames; starting from the 13th century many models followed one another, following the evolution of painting. The frame in Cassetta is produced from the Renaissance, after the mid-15th century: the beginning of secular painting, especially portraits, necessitated the development of a simple and linear frame, far from the glories of the ecclesiastical frames of the Gothic .

Very good state of conservation. Original fixing. Minor losses and signs of aging.
